Latinas de Ohio Opinan ~ Parte 1

Desde la tienda “A Little Bit of Mexico” en Dayton, Ohio un grupo de latinas se reunen mensualmente para compartir gratos momentos y según ellas, estas reuniones les ha sido la mejor terapia para sobrellevar la vida en los Estados Unidos.

Mujer Latina tuvo la oportunidad de ser parte de una de las reuniones del grupo “Las Compatriotas¨ y pudimos conversar de interesantes temas que afectan a la mujer latina de hoy.

Nuestra conversación fue tan agradable que el video se ha tenido que dividir en varias partes. En esta parte, conoceran al grupo integrado por Aida Montes, Delia Lowe, Maria Nash, Indra Leyva-Santiago y Eréndira López-García y como se apoyan, ya que como latinas,  “en nuestros trabajos debemos trabajar más duro para acabar con los estereotipos; somos mujeres que tenemos acento en inglés y como las percepciones que tienen sobre la mujer Latina afectan nuestro entorno.” La mayoría de ellas se vinieron a los Estados Unidos ya adultas, con carreras profesionales que les ha tocado “cambiarlas, adaptarnos, y a aprender a navegar el mundo gringo.”

El ser una mujer latina es un tema muy fascinante, como dirían los entendidos “hay mucha tela que cortar“. Las mujeres Latinas de los Estados Unidos estamos viviendo en otros tiempos y nuestro aporte al enriquecimiento a este país es reconocido, es por eso que importante que nuestras voces sean escuchadas y hoy escucharemos las voces de las Latinas de Dayton, Ohio

OPEN MIC

Mensualmente nos reunimos un grupo de latinas para discutir un libro. No sólo  discutimos literatura sino también compartimos nuestras experiencias como mujeres que vivimos en los Estados Unidos.

En nuestro “Club de Lectura¨ escuchamos opiniones de mujeres de México, Puerto Rico, Perú, Brasil y Venezuela. Pero esta vez, después de discutir un libro muy interesante, decidí invitarlas a compartir su opinión sobre ¿Qué nos hace ser una mujer latina?

Maritza Maldonado-Dyer, especialista clínica en cuanto alcohol y drogas del Concilio de Alcoholismo de Cincinnati ha sido galardonada con el premio “Bridge Builders Award” del Community Action Agency (CAA),  por sus esfuerzos con la comunidad hispana/latina y por la fundación del Greater Cincinnati Latino Coalition.

Esta condecoración reconoce a los individuos u organizaciones que se han asociado con CAA para ayudar a cumplir sus objetivos.

Los invito a conocer a Maritza Dyer, una latina líder que con su esfuerzo y dedicación ayuda a mejorar la vida de los hispanos de Cincinnati.

Maritza Maldonado-Dyer one of Cincinnati’s Latino community leaders will be receiving an award in recognition of her efforts.  The Community Action Agency (CAA) will be presenting Maritza Dyer, of the Greater Cincinnati Latino Coalition, the “Bridge Builders Award” for her efforts with the Hispanic/Latino community and in founding the Greater Cincinnati Latino Coalition.

The award recognizes individuals or organizations who have partnered with CAA to aid in the fulfillment of their mission. The award will be presented to Maritza at their 44th Annual Luncheon meeting on Friday, October 31, 2008 starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Westin Hotel, 21 E. 5th street, Cincinnati, OH.

Maritza Maldonado-Dyer is currently employed by the Alcoholism Council of the Cincinnati, Area, NCADD as a clinical specialist, outreach coordinator, educator and advocate.

Interview with Dolores Huerta an inspiration to the Latinas of today and tomorrow.

Dolores C. Huerta is a co-founder and First Vice President Emeritus of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW). She is a former UC Regent and has earned six honorary doctorates. The mother of 11 children, 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Huerta has played a major role in the American civil rights movement.

A founding board member of the Feminist Majority Foundation, also serves on the board of Ms. Magazine. She began her community organizing legacy with the Latino civil rights group, Community Services Organization (CSO).

In addition to her experience as a teacher, a lobbyst and a labor contractor. Huerta has also been a community activist working for Spanish-speaking police officers and hospital workers.

As one of the most famous and celebrated Latinas in the United States. Huerta has been an advocate for women´s rights and reproductive freedom. At the age of 77, she continues to work for women, immigrants, workers, and youth as the Founder and President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation.(NKU-Dolores Huerta invitation).

Celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana

En honor al mes de la Herencia Hispana y en reconocimiento a los lideres latinos de nuestra comunidad, hoy tenemos como invitada  a Alma Bartos, VP Presidenta Educación de NSHMBA,  para que nos hable sobre el programa “Education for Success” que ayuda  a los  jóvenes latinos  a continuar sus estudios universitarios.

EDUCATION FOR SUCCESS - A Program of the NSHMBA for Hispanic High School Students

This program will help high school students:

• Choose the best way to prepare for the SAT and ACT tests.
• Work with College Admissions.
• Fill out College Applications.
• Consider a career in Engineering
• Apply for Financial Aid.

The students will have the opportunity to meet members of the National Board of Directors of NSHMBA, representatives of local universities and local successful Hispanic professionals.
