El 11 de Febrero del 2010, Rosa Rosales, LULAC National President fue parte de la conferencia anual “Educating Latinos for Kentucky’s Future” organizada por la oficina de Latino Student Affairs de NKU.

Esta conferencia tiene como objetivo principal dar a conocer “las oportunidades y retos que enfrentan los estudiantes Latinos en Kentucky” y Rosa Rosales fue parte de la discusión “Latinos and the Kentucky Diversity Plan” .

Mujer Latina Today tuvo la oportunidad de entrevistar a Rosa Rosales, una de las Latinas más importantes del 2009. La entrevista se ha dividido en dos partes, en la primera conoceremos sobre su infancia en San Antonio, Texas, de la influencia de sus padres, de sus retos y de su trayectoria de líder de su comunidad a presidente nacional de LULAC.

En la segunda parte, Rosa Rosales, como voz de la comunidad Latina de los Estados Unidos, habla del Dream Act; la reforma migratoria; la importancia de apoyar y ayudar a los jóvenes latinos a continuar sus estudios universitarios (Mentoring y Tutoring); los retos de las Latinas de hoy; la discriminación que sufren los Latinos y la importancia de apoyar la aprobación de la reforma del seguro de salud (Health Care Reform).

Mensualmente nos reunimos un grupo de latinas para discutir un libro. No sólo  discutimos literatura sino también compartimos nuestras experiencias como mujeres que vivimos en los Estados Unidos.

En nuestro “Club de Lectura¨ escuchamos opiniones de mujeres de México, Puerto Rico, Perú, Brasil y Venezuela. Pero esta vez, después de discutir un libro muy interesante, decidí invitarlas a compartir su opinión sobre ¿Qué nos hace ser una mujer latina?

A Bilingual Discussion with Latino College Students from Ohio and Kentucky

Every Friday, the Office of Latino Student Affairs of the
Northern Kentucky University offers a Free Food Lunch for their Latino students to understand their needs and to find the way to help them.

On January 16, Mujer Latina was invited to eat a delicious Mexican lunch and to interview them about the real and current issues that matter to them the most.

The interview is divided into five parts. In the first part,  the students in Spanish and in English share their opinions about the new administration, the Dream Act, the opportunities to study in America, the lack of Latino leadership and the discrimination among Latinos.

In the second part, the students continue their conversation in English about discrimination among Latinos and other races.

In the third part, the students share their opinions about education, the Dream Act and economics.” The poorer you are, the less likely you have the opportunity for good college education.¨ The conversation continues about the stereotypes that they are facing as a Latino community today.

In this part, an exchange student from Mexico and  a student from Chile share in SPANISH their opinion about studying in the United States.

In the last part, the students explained being Hispanic. What´s that? A Mexican-American student shares her experience being a ¨Coconut¨.

Giancarlo Guerrero

Giancarlo Guerrero visita a Cincinnati como director invitado para dirigir la  Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra en el Winter Enchantment.

Giancarlo Guerrero nació en Nicaragua, creció en Costa Rica y comenzó a dirigir orquestas en Venezuela.

Giancarlo Guerrero actualmente es el director de la Nashville Symphony Orchestra y durante su visita conocimos de sus comienzos como director de una banda de mariachis y de las oportunidades que se le abrieron gracias a José Antonio Abreu fundador del Sistema Nacional de Orquestas de Venezuela.
