Latinas all over Ohio are gearing up for “Momentum 2010” Ohio Women’s Summit on March 8, 2010, which is a statewide event to discuss and promote the status of Ohio women and girls in the areas of economics, education, and health. But at the Commission, the status and momentum of Latinas is already clear, with the recent appointments of Sonia Troche and Isabel Framer, election of Commissioner Mary Santiago to chair of the board, and rise of Lilleana Calderon-Cavanaugh to the position of executive director.
The accomplishments of these influential and motivated women are impossible to capture in a short article, when they each deserve a full page. However, a brief introduction to who they are will hopefully motivate the reader to want to learn more.
Over the past six years, Sonia Troche has built Adelante, Inc., into a Toledo powerhouse organization with state and national reach. The organization focuses on supporting and empowering Latino families in Northwest Ohio.
As a Certified Judiciary Interpreter and through her service on various boards, Isabel Framer has established
a fierce presence in not just Ohio, but also the federal legal community. Most recently she served as the Chair of the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT). She continues to advocate for the civil rights of Ohio Latinos.
Chairwoman Mary Santiago is full of faith and heart, which guides her in serving the Lorain community in various capacities with local non-profit organizations and her church. She has served as a member of the Commission since 2002.
Lilleana Calderon-Cavanaugh, the Commission’s new executive director, has lived
in Latin America, Africa, South East Asia, Europe and the United States. She is a citizen of the world and brings to the Commission a passion for cultural issues and a desire to promote the appreciation of the Latino culture here in Ohio. Lilleana is committed to the ideals of public service and looks forward to the opportunity to lead the Commission and Ohio Latinos toward a better and more inclusive Ohio.
Although all of these women have very unique stories they have two things in common: a commitment to serving the public in their role at the Commission as well as a determination that has led them to success.
