Freedom Summer (With the theme of “Unity and Change, Then and Now”), the 45th Reunion and Conference at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
In 1964, the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project was a key initiative within the Civil Right Movement. From October 9-11, 2009 Miami University hosted the Mississippi Summer Volunteers and explored the events of Freedom Summer, its impact and relevance to the freedom struggle, and current issues in human rights which reflect the spirit of the Freedom Summer Project.
In OPEN MIC we will hear about this conference from one of the co-organizers, Nishani Frazier, from the Department of History of Miami University.
In the second part of OPEN MIC, we will hear from T.V Reed, Buchanan Distinguished professor of English and American Studies, Washington State University. He is a panelist for the presentation “Music of the Civil Rights Movement”. We will also hear from Guy and Candie Carawan, producers of the CD “Sing for Freedom”- The Story of the Civil Rights Movement through its songs.
